Language And Literacy

NECP uses Arts & Letters for English Language Arts instruction. Students engage with high-quality texts that build knowledge and vocabulary while developing increasingly sophisticated reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.

Our literacy instruction combines explicit skill development with opportunities to read closely, discuss ideas, write about what students are learning, and communicate their thinking clearly. As students progress through the grades, they are expected to read increasingly complex texts and produce increasingly strong written work.

NECP serves a richly multilingual community, with many students speaking a language other than English at home. Students who qualify for English language development services receive targeted instruction designed to accelerate their English proficiency while supporting success in grade-level academic work.

English language development may include instruction within the classroom, small-group support, and additional targeted services based on student need. NECP uses WIDA assessments and resources to identify eligible students, monitor language development, and measure annual progress in English proficiency.

Students at NECP also have opportunities to learn Spanish and Arabic as part of our specialist program. World language classes introduce students to new vocabulary and communication skills while building their understanding of different languages and cultures.

Offering both Spanish and Arabic also reflects the linguistic and cultural diversity of the NECP community and gives students opportunities to see language as an important part of learning and connection.
