Attendance
Regular, on-time attendance is important for student learning and success. Families should notify Northeast College Prep whenever a student will be absent or late to school.
Reporting Absences or Late Arrival
Parents/guardians should report an absence or late arrival by 8:30 a.m. by calling the NECP Attendance Line at 612-248-8243 or emailing attendance@northeastcollegeprep.org.
Please include:
- Student's name and grade
- Date of absence or late arrival
- Reason for the absence or late arrival
Late Arrivals & Early Departures
School begins at 7:35 a.m. Students who arrive after 7:35 a.m. must check in at the main office before going to class.
School ends at 2:15 p.m. Students who need to leave school before 2:15 p.m. must be checked out through the main office.
Four tardies are equivalent to one full day absence.
Excused Absences
An absence may be considered excused for reasons including:
- Student illness
- Serious illness in the student's immediate family
- Death of a family member, close friend, or relative
- Medical, dental, orthodontic, or counseling appointments
- Required court appearances
- Religious instruction, as permitted by law
- Emergency conditions such as fire, flood, or severe weather
- Suspension from school
- Family emergencies
Students are responsible for completing missed schoolwork following an absence. Teachers will work with students to provide opportunities to make up work following excused absences.
Attendance Matters
Regular attendance helps students stay connected to their learning, their teachers, and their school community. Missing school frequently can make it difficult for students to keep up academically, even when absences are excused.
What is Chronic Absence?
A student is considered chronically absent when they miss 10% or more of the school days they have been enrolled, for any reason. This includes both excused and unexcused absences.
Over a typical 180-day school year, 10% is about 18 days of school. Missing just two days per month can add up to chronic absence over the course of the year.
NECP monitors attendance throughout the year and works with families when students begin to miss significant instructional time. Our goal is to identify barriers to regular attendance and partner with families to help students attend school consistently.
Minnesota law requires school attendance for children of compulsory school age. Families with questions or concerns about their child's attendance should contact the school.
