In this week's update, you will see that we are celebrating our September attendance all-stars. These are students who have attended school every day this past month and have arrived on time.
It's incredibly important that students come to school on time every day. Research tells us that the more days students miss, the more they fall behind. Chronic absence refers to students who miss 18 or more days per school year - that's about one month of school and a lot of learning missed! And while 18 days may sound like a lot, it's only an average of 2 days per month.
In fact, only 17% of students in kindergarten and first grade who are considered chronically absent will be reading proficiently by third grade. This compares with 64% of students with good attendance. And by 6th grade, students who are chronically absent are more likely to drop out of high school.
NECP sets an annual attendance goal each year. Our goal is to have at least 90% of our students attending school each day. For the month of September, our overall attendance was 92.4% and our grade level with the best attendance overall was 7th grade at 94.9%.
